Getting into Harvard was one of the most exciting moments of my life—and it didn’t happen overnight. As a Psychology graduate and alumna of Sekolah Victory Plus, I learned that success comes not only from discipline, but also from strategy and self-awareness.
At Sekolah Victory Plus, I was encouraged to become a reflective learner and independent thinker—skills that became essential on my academic journey. The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme here doesn’t just teach content; it shapes how you approach learning for life.
Here are five study tips that truly helped me get into Harvard. These are things I wish more students knew. They’re simple, but powerful—especially if you stay consistent.
Tips #1: Take notes!
I mean actually take notes with pen and paper. This engages multiple senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) while studying, and forces you to write important stuff only. It’s old-school, but it helps you pay attention to the materials.
Tips #2: Space your study
SKS (sistem kebut semalam) is a myth! Your brain needs time and sleep to consolidate information from short term to long term memory. Schedule study time well before your test day.
Tips #3: Study like how you’ll be tested
Taking an exam is a skill in itself. Practice it during your study session. If your exam is a multiple choice exam, make multiple choice quizzes for yourself. If it’s a speech, give a talk in front of your family members. Practicing these situations can reduce test-day anxiety and increase your confidence.
Tips #4: Group study – supportive social network
Be around friends who share your goals and can keep you on track. Study groups can help motivate you to learn, and when you feel stuck, you can just ask a friend. Learning from how other people solve the same problems can give shortcuts to learning.
Tips #5: Sleep well, eat well
Rest is king đź‘‘ Your brain needs to be at optimum levels before you take any kind of exam and it recharges with sleep. Prioritize getting around 8 hours of sleep and eating a healthy breakfast (low sugar, healthy fats). Lock your phone away, and party after exams are over.
From SVP to Harvard: It’s Not About Being Perfect—It’s About Being Prepared
My time at Sekolah Victory Plus showed me that it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being prepared for whatever’s next. The IB curriculum helped me develop not just academic skills, but real habits that stuck with me all the way through university—and into my journey to Harvard.
