Besides making you more respectful and empathetic of others, cultural awareness helps you celebrate your similarities and differences. This means that you’ll hardly treat people differently simply because they aren’t from the same ethnicity or culture as you. That is why we celebrate different cultural events at Sekolah Victory Plus, an International School in Bekasi.

The Lunar New Year celebration is a vibrant cultural event that showcases a spectacular blend of tradition, heritage, and student talent, bringing the festive spirit to life for students, parents, and staff alike. The event kicked off with a thrilling Barongsai (Lion Dance) performance in the lobby, which set the tone for the day’s festivities. Parents gathered to enjoy the lively performance, with the rhythmic drumming and vibrant costumes symbolizing good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead.

Captivating Cultural Performances

Bian Lian, meaning “face-changing,” is an ancient Chinese dramatic art integral to Sichuan opera, where performers swiftly switch between vividly colored masks to depict different characters and emotions. This 300-year-old tradition, originating during the Qing dynasty, was initially a survival technique to scare away wild animals but evolved into a theatrical performance. This provided the students with a vibrant learning experience as they could experience first hand the legendary dance.

A Special Experience for Students

The students were not only thrilled to watch the vibrant lion dance but also participated in the tradition by giving out angpao (red envelopes), a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The children’s faces lit up with joy as they handed out these envelopes, joining in the spirit of sharing and good fortune. This moment was a heartwarming reminder of the importance of community and togetherness in the Lunar New Year festivities.

Creative Celebrations: Art and Craft Activities

To wrap up the celebration, our students embraced their creativity with art and craft activities related to the Lunar New Year theme. As an IB school in Bekasi, we involved students in hands-on activities, creating a paper snake representing the Year of the Snake on this Lunar New Year. The event not only provided an opportunity to learn about the customs and traditions of Lunar New Year but also fostered a sense of unity and shared joy across all grade levels. The entire Lunar New Year celebration was a wonderful success, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the next year’s festivities.
