Parent-Student Cooking: Fostering Healthy Habits & Food Sustainability

Parent-Student Cooking: Fostering Healthy Habits & Food Sustainability

Students and parents of Sekolah Victory Plus Bekasi, an international baccalaureate school in Indonesia, prepared healthy food during SVP parent-student cooking.

Have you ever felt a sense of nostalgia while cooking fried rice? Memories of your childhood may resurface—those moments when you wandered into the kitchen during elementary school, watching your mother cook, eagerly joining in, and eventually mastering the dish yourself over the years.

At Sekolah Victory Plus Bekasi, we are excited to introduce the Parent-Student Cooking Activities as a key part of our Food Sustainability initiative. This program brings parents and students together to prepare nutritious and delicious meals while promoting a strong understanding of healthy food choices. The hands-on experience allows students to learn cooking skills that they can carry with them for life, while parents share their culinary wisdom and family recipes. These sessions, designed to align with the SVP Food and Sustainability Policy, create an engaging way to teach students that healthy food can be both tasty and enjoyable.

What is Food Sustainability?

Food sustainability refers to the practice of producing, consuming, and managing food in ways that protect the environment, support local communities, and ensure future generations have access to nutritious food. It involves:

  • Sustainable Farming – Using eco-friendly methods to grow food while preserving soil, water, and biodiversity.
  • Reducing Food Waste – Minimizing food loss in production, transportation, and consumption.
  • Ethical Sourcing – Ensuring fair wages and humane treatment for food producers and workers.
  • Healthy Diets – Encouraging diverse, plant-based, and locally sourced foods for better nutrition and environmental impact.
Why Should We Introduce Food Sustainability to Students at an Early Age?
  1. Builds Responsible Habits – Teaching children about sustainable eating helps them develop mindful consumption habits from a young age.
  2. Encourages Environmental Awareness – Understanding where food comes from fosters a deeper appreciation for nature and the need to protect resources.
  3. Reduces Food Waste – Educating students about portioning and composting helps minimize waste and promotes a zero-waste mindset.
  4. Promotes Healthier Eating – Learning about sustainable food choices encourages balanced diets and reduces reliance on processed foods.
  5. Prepares Future Leaders – By raising awareness early, students become advocates for sustainability, influencing communities and future policies.

A Collaborative Approach to Food Sustainability

The Parent-Student Cooking Activities are designed to engage the entire school community in food sustainability efforts. By partnering with volunteer parents, Class Parents, and Home Room Teachers, we create an environment where learning is collaborative and fun. Parents will choose recipes that emphasize fresh ingredients, healthy cooking methods, and sustainable practices. Together, they will guide students through cooking techniques such as steaming, stir-frying, and baking, all while emphasizing the importance of reducing waste, limiting refined sugars, and avoiding excess salt. This collaboration supports the broader goal of encouraging food sustainability within our community.

Building a Culture of Wellness Through Cooking

The Parent-Student Cooking activities also serve as a way to foster a culture of wellness at SVP. Through this program, students are not only learning to make healthier food choices but are also gaining an awareness of how their food choices impact the environment. As we work together to create positive change, we hope that these activities inspire students to adopt more sustainable practices in their kitchens and beyond, supporting a healthier future for themselves and the planet.

Let’s build a healthier, more sustainable future together!
